Choose something you like

Jordan really struggled at school and wasn’t too interested in NOVA Transition, where she started after she finished year 12. According to NOVA staff, in her first year of training at Ingleburn NOVA Transition, Jordan would turn up late in clothes unsuitable for a workplace, and swearing.

Thanks to her mother, Raelene’s, encouragement and NOVA’s commitment to finding award-wage work for every trainee that comes through their doors, Jordan’s behaviour started to turn around in her second year.

Excelling in her work-experience placements, Jordan chose childcare as the industry she wanted to work in. Feedback from her employer was encouraging and by the middle of her second year Jordan had secured a traineeship in childcare!

Raelene believes it was the work experience that turned her around. 'It gave Jordan a taste of real work and developed her confidence,' she said of her daughter who’s still thoroughly enjoying her work. 'I like to see her happy and excited, to have her own thing to focus on and receiving positive feedback. You’ve got to work for quite a large part of your life so you may as well do something that you like.'

Reports from Jordan’s manager are always positive. At work, she helps others, ask questions if unsure and shows a lot of patience with the kids. She doesn’t let her disability hold her back and always gets in and has a go.
