How is Transition different from school?

After finishing year 12, young people with disability can go on to a two-year program with NOVA Transition.

So is Transition an extension of school? Trainees from St Marys and Campbelltown NOVA Transition outlets have been pondering the differences. And they’ve taken very different approaches to explaining what they came up with!

St Marys

School is for all children who start when they are five years old, finishing year 12 by age 18. In school we learn reading, writing, respect and discipline.

School also teaches us to be competitive, how to work in teams and how to finish tasks on time.

Students with disability get support after being assessed by a school psychologist. But still some students struggle and drop out of school before finishing year 12.

Many schools don’t prepare students for employment and don’t support them after they leave.

Whereas NOVA Transition …

… is all about supporting young adults with disability to become job-ready and to find and keep a job.

The two-year Transition program has a strong focus on experiential learning. Trainees develop skills and find out about different industries through:

During the program they practise essentials, such as:

  • interview skills
  • how to travel to and from different places
  • how to communicate with each other
  • what to wear.

They also learn about independent living (clothing, renting, buying groceries and cooking) and budgeting when they get paid.

The program helps people to gain qualifications they would need to find and keep employment. NOVA Transition continues to fully or partially support trainees after they have found a job.

In summary:

School teaches us to read and write. At NOVA Transition, we become adults: we learn how to get and keep a JOB.
